I am pleased that you are interested in learning more about the residency program which is committed to its mission of providing unparalleled orthodontic education in a compassionate, professional and friendly environment. The program faculty is composed of individuals who are recognized for clinical, teaching and research expertise. Our faculty and support staffs of enthusiastic, innovative and highly dedicated professionals are devoted to resident education and quality patient care. The camaraderie present further encourages the development of knowledge and expertise. An important attribute of the program is the very positive faculty student ratio. This is especially evident in the very important second year when the faculty dedicate their effort to only one class due to classes entering on alternate years.

Morenzi received her D.M.D. Degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine followed at Penn by a certificate in Advanced General Dentistry. After several years in general practice, she returned to Penn completing her specialty training in Orthodontics in 1989. Morenzi has a number of years of experience as a dental educator, first as a Clinical Associate in the Department of Restorative Dentistry and then in the Department of Orthodontics at Penn.
Her most recent academic position at Penn was Clinical Director, Graduate Orthodontic Program. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and is a Past-President of the Greater Philadelphia Society of Orthodontists. Morenzi practiced orthodontics in Haddonfield, NJ for many years. She is a member of the medical staff at Cooper University Medical Center in New JErsey primarily serving as a consulting orthodontist on their South Jersey Regional Cleft Palate – Craniofacial Team. Borislow, DDS Title: Associate Program Director Bio: Dr. Borislow graduated from Temple University School of Dentistry and completed his orthodontic residency at Albert Einstein Medical Center where he was a recipient of the Lewis B.
Schatz Award as outstanding hospital resident. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) and a past-president of the Greater Philadelphia Society of Orthodontists. Borislow is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, and the American Association of Hospital Dentists. In 2010, he was the recipient of the ABO’s O.B. Vaughan Special Recognition Award given to individuals who have significantly contributed to orthodontic education and furthered the ideals of the ABO. Borislow is on the Editorial Review Board of the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics and serves as a site visit consultant for the Commission on Dental Accreditation.
He is also an Adjunct Associate Professor in Orthodontics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. Paul Adams, DMD Bio: Dr. Adams graduated from King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, Pa where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in biology.
Adams then completed his dental school education at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in Philadelphia where he earned a Doctoral Degree in Dental Medicine in 1992. After completing a general practice residency at Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia he then entered the Einstein Orthodontic Residency Program and received his Certificate in Orthodontics in 1998. Adams is an active member of the teaching staff at Einstein Medical Center's Department of Dental Medicine, where he teaches orthodontic practice and theory to graduate orthodontic residents. He holds professional memberships in the American Association of Orthodontists, American Dental Association, Montgomery/Bucks County Dental Society and several other organizations. Apple, DMD, MSD Bio: Dr. Apple completed his undergraduate education at Duke University.
After graduating with a degree in dental medicine from the University of Pennsylvania, he completed his specialty training in orthodontics and received a masters degree at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. During residency, Dr.
Apple conducted research on the ability to use CBCT imaging in orthodontics. He received awards for outstanding research and clinical excellence. Apple was raised in Southern New Jersey and enjoys living in Philadelphia. He is an active member of the American Association of Orthodontists and Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity. Apple serves as a clinical instructor. Steven Cohen, DDS, MSD Bio: Dr. Cohen graduated from from Rutgers University and then attended the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey where he received his DMD degree.
In 1994 he received a Certificate in Orthodontics and a master’s degree from Temple University's Department of Orthodontics. He joined Albert Einstein's Division of Orthodontics in 1997 as Associate Program Director and served in that capacity until 2006. Since that time, he remained on the faculty teaching clinical orthodontics via seminars and clinical supervision. Cohen serves on the Board of Directors of the Greater Philadelphia Society of Orthodontists and is a Past-President. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontists.
Karen DeSimone, DDS Bio: Dr. Karen DeSimone is a diplomate of The American Board of Orthodontists and a member of the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics. She graduated from Brown University with degrees in Biology and Theater. She earned her Doctorate in Dental Surgery with Honors from Georgetown University and her Post Doctorate Degree in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics from Howard University. She was the recipient of The DeRisi Award for outstanding achievement in academic and clinical skills.
Her research was published in The American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. She is also affiliated with professional organizations including The American Association of Orthodontists, the Middle Atlantic Society of Orthodontists, New Jersey Association of Orthodontists, American Dental Association, and the Mercer County Dental Association. DeSimone’s academic and clinical responsibilities at Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia include reviewing current and classic literature, and clinical instruction and supervision of residents. Matthew Etter, DMD Bio: Dr.
Matthew Etter is a graduate of Emory University, where in 2004 he received a Bachelor of Sciences degree in Neurosciences and Behavioral Biology. Following his undergraduate studies, Dr. Etter attended Temple University's School of Dentistry until his commencement in 2008. After completing a General Practice Dental Residency at Abington Memorial Hospital, he entered Maimonides Hospital's orthodontic residency program where he received his certificate in 2012. He then returned to and involved himself in his native Philadelphia's orthodontic community entering private practice. Etter is a member of the American Dental Association, the Pennsylvania Dental Association, the American Association of Orthodontists and the Mid-Atlantic Society of Orthodontists.
Charles Gemmi, III, DMD Bio: Dr. Gemmi is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. He received his Certificate in Orthodontics from Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia, where he also completed a two-year general practice residency prior to his orthodontic graduate training. During his tenure at Einstein Medical Center, Dr. Gemmi received multiple awards including the Benjamin Lebby Award for Outstanding General Practice Resident and the Schatz Award for Outstanding Member of the entire House Staff. Gemmi is a Past President of the Eastern Dental Society, and is on the Board of Directors of the Greater Philadelphia Society of Orthodontists.
He is an active member of the Philadelphia County Dental Society, the American Association of Orthodontists, the Middle Atlantic Society of Orthodontists, the Pennsylvania Dental Association, and the American Dental Association. Prior to his residencies, Dr.
Gemmi received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from Villanova University and then graduated Magna Cum Laude from Temple University School of Dentistry, where he received the Hinman Scholarship for Outstanding Dental Student, and was inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honorary Dental Society. At Einstein Medical Center, Dr. Gemmi serves as a clinical instructor and leads several seminars including: case conferences, preventive and interceptive orthodontics (early treatment), and temporo mandibular dysfunction. Audra Kiefer, DMD Bio: Dr. Kiefer earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Comprehensive Science from Villanova University.
After graduating from Villanova, Dr. Kiefer completed her dental school education at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in Philadelphia where she earned a Doctoral Degree in Dental Medicine in 2002. She graduated summa cum laude and was also inducted into the Omnicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society, the Matthew Cryer Honor Society and was honored with the American Association of Women Dentists Award.
Kiefer then completed a general practice residency at Abington Memorial Hospital. She entered private practice after the general practice residency where she practiced for several years. Kiefer’s orthodontic graduate training occurred at Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia where she received her Certificate in Orthodontics. She served as Chief Resident in her second year and represented the residency program in the Charley Schultz Resident Scholars Program at the Annual Meeting of the American Association of Orthodontics in 2007.
Audra Kiefer is a Diplomate of the American Board. Cary Leizer, DMD Bio: Dr. Leizer completed his orthodontic training at Einstein Medical Philadelphia, where he was appointed chief resident in his last year. He received his Doctorate of Dental Medicine degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey’s Dental School where he was inducted into the National Dental Honor Society. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Leizer is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and is additionally an active member in the American Association of Orthodontists, the New Jersey Association of Orthodontists, the American Dental Association and the New Jersey Dental Association.
Leizer has been active in multiple research projects and has had his research published in multiple dental journals. He has presented his research at the American Association of Orthodontists Annual Meeting and has lectured on several orthodontic topics. He maintains an ongoing teaching position in clinical orthodontics as a faculty member in Einstein’s Orthodontic Residency Program. Ross Long, DMD, MS, PhD Bio: Dr. Long is Executive Director of the Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic, Lancaster, PA. He also is in charge of the Orthodontic and Research Divisions at that Clinic. He received his BS degree in psychology at Dartmouth.

Following that he attended the University of Pittsburgh and earned his DMD degree from the School of Dental Medicine and his MS degree in Speech Pathology from the Department of Speech and Hearing. He subsequently attended the University of North Carolina where he received a Certificate in Graduate Orthodontic training from the Orthodontic Department, School of Dentistry, and a PhD degree from the Department of Anatomy, School of Medicine. Long has also been the Principle Investigator on three major NIH/NIDCR research grant projects. He maintains academic appointments at Penn State University’s Hershey Medical Center, and has been a member of the Albert Einstein Medical Center’s Orthodontic faculty since 1977. He has supervised research projects for over 30 students and residents. He has also published over 50 scientific articles and 7 book chapters.
He has served as a US representative to participate in the World Health Organization’s attempts to develop improved international cooperation in the field of craniofacial anomalies. Long has been active in the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association (ACPA) since 1975 and has served as Treasurer for 9 years, Vice-President, and President. He currently is the Head of ACPA’s Americleft Project, an initiative to carry out intercenter comparisons of cleft lip/palate treatment outcomes for evidence-based identification of best practices. He has received the Distinguished Service Award and the Honors of the Association for his work in ACPA. He is Past-President of the Pennsylvania Federation of Cleft Palate Clinics, the Midwest Component of the Angle Society of Orthodontists and the International Confederation for Cleft Lip and Palate and Related Craniofacial Anomalies.
He is a member of the American Dental Association, Angle Society of Orthodontists and American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and a Fellow in the American College of Dentists. Mark McDonough, DMD Bio: Dr.
McDonough is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. He attended Fordham University for his undergraduate studies and earned a Doctorate in Dental Medicine (DMD) from the University of Pennsylvania. He interned at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City as a general practice resident and obtained his Certificate in Orthodontics from Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia. As well as being an experienced orthodontist, Dr. McDonough has also been a clinical instructor at Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia since 1995.
He is an editor of “Orthodontic Practice – US”. This is a national journal that promotes excellence in orthodontics and covers a full range of clinical and practice management topics. He is also a contributing writer for this journal. McDonough has served on the Executive Committee of the Mercer Dental Society for eight years and is currently a Past-President. He is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, American Board of Orthodontics, Middle Atlantic Society of Orthodontics, Pennsylvania Association of Orthodontists, American Dental Association and the New Jersey Dental Association. At Einstein Medical Center, Dr. McDonough serves as a clinical instructor with additional expertise in the use of lasers and temporary anchorage devices.
He hosts an on-going seminar series for both 2nd and 3rd year residents, including time devoted to preparing the residents for the American Board of Orthodontics Written Examination. Stuart Messinger, DDS Bio: Dr. Messinger received his D.D.S.

He received his Certificate in Orthodontics from Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia and has been a faculty member at Einstein for many years. He holds professional memberships in the American Association of Orthodontists, American Dental Association, Chester/Delaware County Dental Society and several other organizations.
Harold Middleberg, DMD Bio: Dr. Middleberg completed his orthodontic residency at Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia where he served as chief resident in his last year. Middleberg received his Doctorate in Dental Medicine from Temple University School of Dentistry and his Bachelor of Science Degree from LaSalle University. Middleberg is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. He served as Secretary-Treasurer, and President of the Eastern Dental Society.
Currently, Dr. Middleberg is a Governor of the Philadelphia County Dental Society.
He is an active member of the American Association of Orthodontists, the Middle Atlantic Society of Orthodontists, the Greater Philadelphia Society of Orthodontists, the World Federation of Orthodontists, the Pennsylvania Dental Association, and the American Dental Association. At Einstein Medical Center, Dr. Middleberg teaches comprehensive clinical orthodontics via conference - seminars and as a clinical instructor.
Didactically, he directs seminar series in orthodontic practice management, and ethics. Yana Volfson Newman, DDS Bio: Dr. Newman attended the University of Buffalo School of Dental Medicine and subsequently completed a general practice residency at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark, NJ. Karlee grey kids. Upon completion of the residency, she entered the orthodontic residency Albert Einstein Medical Center earning her certificate in orthodontics. Newman is an active member in several professional organizations including the New Jersey Association of Orthodontists, Middle Atlantic Society of Orthodontists, American Dental Association, New Jersey Dental Association, and Monmouth-Ocean County Dental Society. Currently Dr. Newman is a member of the orthodontic teaching staff at Albert Einstein Medical Center.
She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. Michael Roth, DDS Bio: Dr.
Michael Roth is a graduate of the Georgetown University School of Dentistry. Following graduation he completed a one year General Practice Residency at Albert Einstein Medical Center. Roth is also co-winner of the Benjamin Lebby Award given each year as an outstanding General Practice Resident. Roth entered private practice for two years before returning to Albert Einstein Medical Center for his three year post graduate study in Orthodontics.
Roth is in the private practice of Orthodontics locally and has served on the Orthodontic Faculty for the past 25 years as an Attending Orthodontist. Roth has been active in local community events and has served on the Executive Board of Montgomery Bucks Dental Society for several terms and is also a Past-President of the Greater Philadelphia Society of Orthodontists.
Currently Dr. Roth serves as President of The Albert Einstein Medical Center Orthodontic Alumni Society. Dennis Tartakow, DMD, MEd, EdD, PhD Bio: Dr. Tartakow is a graduate of Adelphi University (BA); Tufts University School of Dental Medicine (DMD); Long Island Jewish Medical Center Rotating Internship (Certificate); Albert Einstein Medical Center, Orthodontic Residency (Certificate); and Union Institute & University, Graduate College (MEd, EdD, PhD).
In addition to Dr. Tartakow’s faculty appointment at Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia, his dental academic appointments include Clinical Professor and Former Director of the TMD Section, Post Graduate Orthodontic Department, Nova Southeastern University, College of Dental Medicine and Clinical Professor, Orthodontic Department, Craniofacial Sciences and Therapeutics, University of Southern California, School of Dentistry. Also, he is an Orthodontics-Pediatric Dentistry Test Constructor, Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations, American Dental Association; and a member of the Research Council of the J.
Paul Getty Research Institute and Library; and a member of the Board of Trustees, Union Institute & University. Tartakow is board-certified and a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, the American Board of Special Care Dentistry, and is a Certified Dental Editor. He holds fellowships in the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists. Memberships include the American Academy of Orofacial Pain; Royal Society of Medicine (London, UK); American Association of Hospital Dentists; Academy of International Dental Studies; World Federation of Orthodontists; American Association of Dental Editors; Pierre Fauchard Academy; and the Florida Dental Association (Honorary). Tartakow currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Ortho Tribune and practiced orthodontics, temporomandibular joint disorders and orofacial pain therapy in Palm Beach, FL and now resides in Marina del Rey, CA. He is a consultant in orthodontics, TMJ disorders, orofacial pain, practice management, and healthcare administration. He has lectured to medical, dental and legal groups, authored 150-plus independent and original articles and mentored over 600 medical and dental students.
Irene Valenza, DMD Bio: Dr. Valenza completed her undergraduate work at New York University and received her dental degree (DMD) from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. She then completed the three year residency program in Orthodontics at the Albert Einstein Medical Center. Valenza has been active in many dental organizations. She is a member of the American Dental Association, the Pennsylvania Dental Association, the American Association of Orthodontists, the Middle Atlantic Society of Orthodontists, and the Montgomery-Bucks Dental Society where he served on many committees as well as having been Treasurer and Chair of the Children's Dental Health Month for several years. She is also a past president of the Philadelphia Society of Dental Surgeons. Valenza has also represented dentistry as a member of several delegations, most recently on a visit to assess dental training and care in Cuba.
Currently, in addition to her private practice of Orthodontics in Abington, Dr. Valenza is a member of the faculty at Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia’s Orthodontic Residency Program. Martin Weinstein, DMD, MS Bio: Dr. Weinstein is a graduate of Cooper Union, College of Engineering and Science, where he received a full scholarship and earned numerous awards. He received his D.M.D.
Degree from Harvard University, School of Dental Medicine in 1979. He went on to earn a master's degree in Biomedical Science along with a specialty certificate in Orthodontics from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Weinstein is a Board-Certified Orthodontist and a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. He is also certified in the Invisalign system of tooth movement. Since 1991, Dr. Weinstein serves as an active faculty member at the Albert Einstein Medical Center Orthodontic Residency Program, providing advanced post-graduate dental and orthodontic instruction. He also lectures on the latest advances in his field to a variety of national and international professional associations in addition to publishing the results of his ongoing research in the leading orthodontic journals.
Gary Wiser, DMD, MS, MBA Bio: Dr. Gary Wiser received his DMD degree from Temple University School of Dentistry.
After serving in the U.S. Army Dental Corp he entered Temple University’s graduate orthodontic program where he completed his graduate training earning a Master of Science degree. He then entered private practice in Freehold New Jersey where he remained for many years. In 1995 while continuing his orthodontic practice, Dr. Wiser earned a Master of Business Administration degree at the Temple University Fox School of Business and Management and immediately established Wiser Management, LLC and currently serves as the President and CEO of the corporation.
At Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia, Dr. Wiser teaches orthodontic practice management to the third year residents via his course, “Transition to Practice”.
