Vcds Software

I'm having some fuel issues with my '01 Beetle, posted about it in another thread. All I have right now is a generic code scanner, gives out error code 1248 which could be multiple things.

Would it be worthwhile to buy the VCDS software? I saw two different versions on Ross-Tech website, a regular and a 'lite'? What would be the difference? Are any of the software packages I see on eBay worthwhile? Sorry for all the questions, but I know nothing about this software and very little about diesels in general, I would rather not throw money at parts and guess what is wrong.

I love the car and don't plan on getting rid of it anytime soon, so I don't mind a small investment if it pays off. Any helpful comments would be appreciated, thanks! This is specific to ross tech so moving to that subforum.

Welcome to the forum. No the VCDS-Lite software is free but it doesn't come with a lead just the same as VCDS full software. The Lite version doesn't do as many.

The one for your car is the KII. I would get the full one because it come with tech support and the software license follows the cable. If you decide to sell it has very high resale. I've seen them sold used for the same price as a new one but that is a rare case where 2 people on ebay got into a bidding war and I guess they both really wanted it, lol. If you buy an ebay cable or lite, the license is for a user and it has no resale value. IMHO, it's actually cheaper to buy a genuine cable and sell it when you're done. So asking about it as an investment, the final cost is the depreciation minus opportunity cost and interest.

If you are interested in doing your own servicing or maintenance on a VW or Audi then VCDS is well worth having as it is a very good alternative to the VW dealer equipment at a fraction of the price. Although it is not cheap Chitty has explained the economics of the genuine VCDS rather than a pirated clone if you come to sell it and you do get full Ross-Tech support and software updates for life and this moves with the cable Given the price of just a dealer diagnostic or a coding alteration you would break even very quickly. With the equipment to hand you can check the health of your car at regular intervals for faults that may not be serious enough to throw a warning light and it is also quite fun to check out all the hidden options in your car. View this function table to see some of the differences between VCDS-Lite and VCDS: In short, VCDS-Lite is based on the product from back in 2004.

While we updated it to work with Win 7 and Win 8, and we did update some data behind the tool, we have not revised functions of it. VCDS-Lite has no support for CAN based diagnostics. (The OPs 2001 Beetle does not use CAN diagnostics) VCDS-Lite does not have any of the user friendly improvements like Advanced Measuring Values, Long Coding Helper, Automated Service Reset and so on. However, VCDS-Lite on older vehicles is adequate and should be a considered option. Be careful of the wires that are available and compatible. Some are just plain junk!

Do note, registering VCDS-Lite will not make a wire work! If it doesn't work in the free Shareware mode, it will not work in the registered mode either!

Click to expand. So, with VCDS giving more information - providing the VAG codes as well as the OBD related codes, don't you think it would give more complete information? I know I believe that because I have seen an OBDII code reader show one or two codes while a VAG compatible reader provides 10 or 11. More codes leads to a better understanding of the problem at hand. I would use the term accurate as I think all the codes are accurate.

No, as I have said, a VAG compatible scanner provides a more complete list of codes. Ol'Rattler is right on with what he has told you. Thanks Bruce. Well, I ordered the cable off of eBay and went through a ton of posts showing how to install it correctly, guess I'm just an idiot?

Can't get it to interface with the VCDS software, I installed it automatically, then deleted it and installed the FTDI drivers manually. Both times it said it installed correctly, but it said it installed on COM 6??

Can't seem to redirect it or find the other ports, I know a little about computers but someone with genuine knowledge would put me to shame in a heartbeat. Anyone know a work-around to this problem?
