The North Vancouver School District welcomes international students from around the world to study at its top rated schools. Students may choose to complete secondary school graduation or take a general studies program at one of our six secondary or twenty-five elementary schools. North Vancouver offers the highest possible standard of academic excellence to its students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 and is committed to offer high quality, comprehensive education programs consisting of over 200 provincial and locally developed programs and services. Participation in both our international and homestay programs help to foster relationships between International and Canadian students by sharing time, experiences, and cultural backgrounds. Vancouver School Board offers a variety of summer program courses to students in grades K ~ 12 in July ~ early August. International students are welcome to register. In May Summer School opens online registration facilitation for the following students: - Newly arrived VSB students - Non VSB, BC students - International students.

North Vancouver has an abundance of parks and natural parkland for every type of recreation which enhance the unique setting of the North Shore. Grouse and Seymour Mountains, both located in North Vancouver, provide lush forests for biking, hiking, and walking as well as amazing slopes for snowboarding, downhill, and cross-country skiing. Deep Cove offers ocean-side opportunities for sailing kayaking while other recreational activities include golfing, skateboarding, hockey, ice skating, tennis, and swimming. With a population of approximately 125,000, North Vancouver is only 8 km north of the City of Vancouver and 45 minute drive from the Vancouver International Airport. Restaurants, shopping, entertainment, and museums are all easily accessible from our location. Our proximity to water, mountains (including world-class Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains) and the North Shore municipalities make North Vancouver a highly desirable destination for international students. Our Schools The North Vancouver School District enrolls approximately 16,000 students in Kindergarten to Grade 12 with a limited number of international students at each school.
Each of our secondary schools enroll a maximum of 60 international students and the elementary schools enroll a maximum of 20 international students. Schools in North Vancouver are organized into 'families of schools' with our six secondary schools servicing twenty-five elementary schools.
All teachers are BC government certified and use a variety of modern methods to provide students with high quality instruction. North Vancouver School District students regularly perform extremely well on provincial assessments of reading, writing, and numeracy and on provincial scholarship examinations.
Learning at all levels requires the active participation of the student. All students are expected to follow the Code of Conduct of their school. Homestay Lynne Bolen, the International Program Administrator in North Vancouver, and her staff, work very closely with outside homestay agencies to place international students with caring families. Our goal is to place international students within close proximity of their schools, preferably within walking distance, so that students are fully integrated and have an opportunity to develop a sense of school and community.

Homestay plays a key role in the international student experience and greatly enhances the overall success for these students. The primary purpose behind homestay placement is to give international students the opportunity to experience life with a Canadian family while they develop their English language skills in a caring, comfortable family setting.
While living in homestay, international students learn about, and begin to adapt to, Canadian culture and develop lifelong friendships. Local homestay agencies interview all homestay families and each home is individually visited. Homestay families are carefully screened, must be prepared to include students in family activities, and are encouraged to spend quality time with the students and treat them like extended members of family. Homestay companies work closely with families to ensure safety, security, and comfort to the international students. Homestay agencies work towards matching the interests and needs of the students with their host families. International students are provided with their own fully furnished bedroom, three quality meals a day, and access to laundry facilities, television, and telephone.

Long Program - Secondary Schools Students who enter Grade 10 earn credits toward graduation in a three-year program: Grades 10, 11, and 12. A total of 80 credits are required for graduation which are earned by taking required courses such as Language Arts, Social Studies, Science(s), Mathematics, Physical Education, Fine Arts, and Applied Skills programs. Fine Arts subjects such as Dance, Drama, Music, and Visual Arts provide opportunities for students to represent their learning through creating, communicating, and performing. Applied Skills courses such as Business Education, Home Economics, and Information Technology provide students with an opportunity to develop knowledge and apply practical skills.
Each secondary school has an International Counselor available to assist the international students with course selection and programming as well as offering support and guidance throughout the year(s) of study. Secondary-aged international students may reside with family members or in approved homestays. Long Program - Elementary Schools While studying in North Vancouver, elementary-aged international students may enroll in our schools for a minimum of one year providing they reside with their own parent(s).
Elementary-age students (Kindergarten to Grade 7) are not permitted to reside in homestay or with family friends or relatives. The North Vancouver School District's elementary schools provide quality education for students in Kindergarten through Grade 7 programs which are divided into two levels: primary (Kindergarten to Grade 3) and intermediate (Grades 4 to 7). Kindergarten students must turn five before December 31 of the year they enter Kindergarten.
