Fila

It's very good to see so many positive comments on this wonderful album. Fila's first album away from the excellent Pork Recordings is a mesmerising creation. The fusion of styles (funk, jazz, ambient etc) is wonderfully realised and Fila have produced an album with a sound of its' own. As pointed out by nearly all the contributors below (ignore scoundrel's assertion that this album is uneven - UNEVEN?!). This album is a very coherent whole. As oblaky points out, this album is an single listening experience, with each track forming an integral part of the overall fabric. There are of course moments that each listener will cherish especially keenly.

A Touch of Cloth was meant to keep you feeling all warm and fuzzy inside under any conditions. In a world gone crazy with homogenized products, Fila Brazillia continue to deliver, serving up the unique, the outstanding, the extra fine. For me the closing track Spores is simply stunning. A chillout masterpiece up there with the finest I can recall. Whenever the track comes on, I will totally defocus any distractions and just sit still spellbound by the melodic perfection of it. Fila have always had a very strong ability to assemble a diverse range of influences into a new whole, but for me this album demonstrates that knack with more confidence and sureness of touch than their other excellent albums before or since. As others have said, this is a great starting point for those interested in FB, and for those already acquainted this represents a crowning glory of their excellent music. If someone forced me to pick a favourite FB album then it would be this one.

The music here is delicately woven with the best sounding cotton and silk, interlaced with gilded woolly threads. It forms an intricate and expensive medieval shroud with quirky patterns overhauled in electronic form. Rarely have I heard such complete and original set of tracks rolled into such layered, rich and complex album. Favourite tracks would be difficult to pick as they all create a single listening experience with amazing, uplifting and upbeat tracks (Track 1), moving further to various different emotional moments. If really forced, again, I would pick Slow Light and Snakeskin Bib for the exalted feeling they cause in me when I come back to them. As implied earlier, there is no weak moment here.

Fila stands strong, effortlessly flirting with your ears, hearts and minds. If you don't know or own this one, I envy you.
